Twenty six murals currently dot the landscape of Rock Rapids, Iowa, June 6, 2013, and more are expected. Rock Rapids Mural Society member Norma Jansma explains the mural project began in 2002 as a way of telling the history of the small town. (photo by Jerry Mennenga ©)

The Rock Rapids Depot, years ago, was not only a center of activity for freight being brought in and transported out, train travel was popular for business and pleasure as well. Also, many military personnel departed and returned by rail during both World War I and World War II.
Communities with railroad track lines running through were the popular activity center of the area for not only the city dwellers but rural residents as well.”
