Siouxland, lighting and seniors, high school that is

13 Aug

I recently photographed senior portraits of a young man entering his last year of high school. I always find it fun to photograph young people. They are full of energy and are looking forward to what life will bring them. The images they invoke can be a bit of an insight into who they are.

But shooting portraits is also fun because one can play with light. Which I really like to do. Whether it is natural or artificial, light makes the photograph.  I photographed John in a “rural” setting at a park and then in an urban setting downtown. I blended the natural light with some fill for the rural setting, but basically set up a portable studio with small strobes for the urban landscape. Controlling light is the first thing needed to make a portrait and give it and the subject character. John was an easy person to work with and created some really nice looks. I used the lighting in the urban setting to make John stand out and also give him a bit of mystery in some of the other photographs.
