Celebrating 125 years in Siouxland, Remsen

10 Jul

Over the July 4 weekend I visited the small community of Remsen, Iowa, which celebrated its 125th anniversary, or its quasquicentennial (kwas key centennial). For such a small community, the turnout was spectacular with people attending downtown events and lining many streets to watch the parade. The only sad thing about these small communities, is that they remain small. Bustling with business and opportunity shortly after its founding and into the next century, as progress made its way across the Midwest and America, rural communities were left behind. A depression forced many to leave their hometowns and seek a better life elsewhere. But the one thing that did not leave, was pride in the community itself and the belief that opportunity is still there.
