Siouxland historic remembrances, Jefferson, SD

19 Jun

Driving around and into smaller communities in the Siouxland area you sometimes come across small historic mementos that gives a traveler a little look into that community’s history. That is true of Jefferson, South Dakota, and a cross that stands next to a church in the community. The Grasshopper cross refers to a harvest plague the community suffered a century or so ago and their faith in being delivered from the pesky pests that destroyed crops. Small towns sometimes also give visual contrasts to a visitor, like the church that is in plain sight of the bar on Main Street. Whether one is escaping going in, or feeling guilty coming out, depends on a person’s point of view.
