Viewing history in Siouxland, Storm Lake’s Buena Vista County Museum

30 Dec

Earlier this fall I visited the community of Storm Lake, Iowa. It sits next to a lake and is home to the Buena Vista University. It also contains the Buena Vista County Historical Society Museum.  The day I visited the museum was in preparation for an upcoming fundraiser, and tables with items for sale were placed throughout the museum. I find visiting small town museums a great place to learn about the community and to see some snippets of its past and how it has or has not progressed into the present day era. Some museums I have seen include items that children today cannot imagine, like telephone land lines instead of cell phones. Old time radios instead of computers and iTunes or other online music providers. There is nostalgia but also the reminder that life was not always rosier or easy. Hard work, less material goods and other items from the past help people of today understand what life was previously like. And hopefully provides that understanding of appreciation we should have for life today.
