Finding Siouxland History, Yankton, South Dakota

21 Apr

During a recent trip up to Yankton, South Dakota, I visited a small museum in the town, the Dakota Territorial Museum. Small in size, it had a number of exhibits and also some period buildings not yet open until this May. This town in the early history of the United States was a gateway to the Dakota Territories that included both North and South Dakota and was established by Pres. Abraham Lincoln as the territorial capitol for the first years that settlers began moving westward. On a later visit I hope to see the exhibits inside these out buildings and learn more about the early frontier that is part of Siouxland.
