A quick stop in Siouxland, Centerville, SD

16 Sep

Coming back from a trip to Sioux Falls, SD I stopped in a small town of Centerville, SD in Siouxland.  Like many small towns it has its history. I gentleman I talked with said the current location of Centerville is its third location. And I guess the third time is the charm. The man said originally the community was located nearer the Vermillion River which flows nearby, but the river flooded and the town was moved. At its second location, the river flooded again, and that move did not remove the community to yet again another flooding. But evidently in its third and final destination as a community, Centerville has been spared any more floods, or it may be the river hasn’t flooded like it did a couple of centuries ago.

I saw the community on a week day, late in the afternoon. It was quiet, but a nice, well kept community in which a passerby could see the pride residents have for the place they call home.
