Helping the Homeless in Siouxland, Sioux City

21 Nov

Every year there is a “homeless sleep out” at a local ball park in Siouxland where people erect cardboard boxes and tents pretending to be homeless for one night to experience what it must be like to be homeless with no place to sleep. The fundraiser helps provide through the coming winter months house and feed those who are less fortunate, whether through choice, mental illness or some other reason. This year was a warmer year than normal. A person I know who slept out this year with his children said the first year he participated he woke up to a few inches of snow. Like many issues affecting the area, this is one that is ongoing with no end in sight. It seems studies after studies have been conducted and no one has yet come up with a solution, while governmental programs and support for people suffering have slowly faded over time. It makes a person wonder how far away from such a situation is oneself in this day and age when a serious injury or illness can deplete an individual’s resources. In a “land of plenty” so many go wanting, especially families. And as the giving season comes into view, Thanksgiving and Christmas, how many are thankful for what they have and thoughts and prayers to those who have not.
