Harvest Time in Siouxland, Rural Monona County, Whiting

Harvest time has arrived in Siouxland as elsewhere where agriculture plays a big part of a state’s economy. Farmers are working quickly and long hours to get their crops out after a year in the state of Iowa where drought has maintained a presence for quite a while. And recently rains are predicted for the area, which during harvest is not always welcomed even in drought situations as it adds unwanted water content to the soybeans delaying harvest and hurting farmer’s profits as the soybeans like corn must fall within a certain water content criteria for grain elevators to accept them without being “docked money per pounds. And these days, pennies count.

Crowing about the Scarecrow Festival in Siouxland, Akron

I made my first visit to the Akron Scarecrow Festival this year. I am always amazed at finding new events and places to check out in Siouxland. A family-friendly event with some art booths and food and a competition with the best Scarecrow figure.

Visitors could wander around and vote on their favorite one to help judges select an overall winner and runners-up.

It’s always fun to see community’s supporting their own events and enjoying the end of one season and the beginning of another. Although I hope Christmas is a way off yet.

Halloween Approaches in Siouxland, Cherokee

Halloween is almost here and children will be out trick and treating with their parents as the eyes loom large at the candy they accumulate and the other “spooky creatures” they see doing the same. On a recent visit to Cherokee, Iowa I saw some decorations in the downtown area as local businesses decorate street corners and store fronts with fall and Halloween decor. Some attempts were made with what seemed more enthusiasm than others. But the attempt was made to decorate the downtown area of this community which is more than can be said for other communities. It was fun to walk and see what was there and to enjoy a ommunity’s celebration of a holiday.
