Like many communities, Sioux City has a number of festivities that celebrates the Christmas holiday and season. One of which is the Festival of Trees, with decorated trees that are then available through a private bidding auction which helps support one chosen charity or organization that particular year. Various organizations and people decorate their tree and they are available for viewing for a week or so until the bidding process ends and people who win can pick up their very own Christmas tree for the holiday.

But during the first evening while the parade of lights is happening outside, folk who wander into the Ho Chunk Centre are also entertained. A local church bell choir, Grace United Methodist Church, perform a few numbers that is always amazing to hear. All the more I think because the bells always seem to be perfectly tuned. Making me wonder how exactly can bells be tuned.

And then to top off the evening, a local dance group performs various numbers or routines to renditions of holiday Christmas songs. Mostly jazzy version that matches the energy of the young dancers. Cute as they are, the younger ones making the best of it while not always hitting the mark or executing their cue. But no one cares. It’s a fun performance for the beginning of the holiday season and gets people into the mood for the season with a reason.

The Festival of Trees in Siouxland, Sioux City

The holiday season in Siouxland and other places provide a time to take stock of one’s place in life and current events and give some thanks for a good year and any kinds of blessings that occur. Most communities have various fund raisers taking place for various reasons throughout the year. During the Christmas holiday season organizations ask folk to decorate trees which are then auctioned and the proceeds go to one or more deserving, although all are, organizations locally which benefit from people bidding and those folk get a nicely decorated tree to see them through the holiday.

Locally one such event occurs after a Lighted Parade and people can then go inside, warm up and see the creative decorations individuals and groups have used in decorating a tree. All the while a local dance company’s young “stars” perform and it makes a delightful evening of sharing and hopefully getting people into that Christmas spirit and again, giving one pause and a time to reflect and be grateful for all favors, large and small.

Siouxland’s Christmas season and the Festival of Trees, Sioux City

27 Nov

Every year after Sioux City’s “winter” parade, the Festival of Trees fundraiser  is help in the building along Fourth Street. Previously it was the Terra Centre in downtown Sioux City, Iowa, now it’s the Ho-Chunk Centre. This is the 22nd annual festival which is a fundraiser helping support Gigi’s Playhouse. There are over 70 decorated Christmas trees that are for sale via a private auction, the highest bidder gets to take the tree home. The trees are on display at the center and bidding is open through Dec. 4. It’s well worth the time to see the many styles of decorating that is done, and to support a good cause.
