Fall Color in Siouxland, Rural Harrison County

As winter inches closer with the shortest day of the year making it official, I will still be lamenting the passing of fall as I do every year. On a nice, crisp fall day, fall colors seem to come alive and appear more vibrant, and a “warmish” sun makes the day more enjoyable in Siouxland, without those driving wind gusts that can easily drop the temperature 10-15 degrees.

Cruising back country roads and having the time to stop and enjoy the sights is a ritual I enjoy every year. I am happy I have more time these days to enjoy that ritual even though winter puts a hold on driving some back roads. Never pays to get stuck in the country during the winter. But time will pass and that opportunity I hope will avail itself again next year to maybe some new places and revisit others to see what they look like then.

Sun and Shade or Light and Dark in Siouxland, Rural Iowa

29 Jan

Some days when I am out driving about Siouxland I don’t always have an objective in mind for what I want to photograph, other than when I see something I like I stop and take a photograph. It isn’t until sometime later that themes, or my perception of such emerge from my images. I enjoy photographing contrasts, lights and darks. The ying and the yang competing against one another within an image.

It’s helpful if there are other elements that pull the viewer into it and make the image more compelling. But sometimes you settle for what you have and call it a day.

Loess Hills in Siouxland, Harrison County

Driving around the Siouxland area of Iowa I am many times drawn to the Loess Hills region. The compacted earth created by an earlier ice age created these specific deposits of earth. It is the rolling hills that I enjoy enjoy driving about in and sitting on the top of one such hill and looking into the valley below. People think of fly-over Iowa as flat corn field, but corn fields are found in the hills as well.

But there are also those picturesque barns and vistas that can bring simple joy when out driving about and enjoying nature. Being outdoors being the key aspect.
