Jackson Pollock in Siouxland, Sioux City

8 Mar

The Sioux City, Iowa, Art Center currently has Jackson Pollock’s painting, “Mural”, on display until April 15 of this year. Pollock painted this work in the 1940’s, originally commissioned by art patron Peggy Guggenheim in 1943 and Pollock is credited with ushering in the era of abstract expressionism in America. Now a part of the University of Iowa museum’s collection, the painting does travel to various locations for exhibition and Sioux City was fortunate to obtain it for display, once sufficient funding was in place to cover upgrade and security and transportation costs.

The art center is a nice place to hang out on most days in Siouxland when it is open. Sunny, when the sun is shining, there is a creative “play” room for children as well as a permanent collection of display. The center also offers a number of classes for children and adults in various mediums. It’s a nice way to start a day or spend it.
