A Walk in the Park in Siouxland, Latham Park, Sioux City

People in Siouxland are like others and very much like doing things that seem normal again, or some facsimile of such a notion. Latham Park always has a fall art vendor day, Art in the Park, where various folk can sell their wares and others get to peruse and purchase in a pretty environment.

But thoughts about the virus wasn’t far from some people’s minds and others didn’t seem to mind or care. Which kind of makes returning to normal a mixed bag. Others who think nothing is going on can’t move on because some people wear masks reminding them, and those wearing masks are worried about their health and well being but find others don’t mind or seem to care. A classic Catch 22.

And who knows how long and how severe this aberration will continue. But it is nice there are events again for folk to get out to. So many have been cancelled until the following year and hopes the new normal will become normal.

Enjoying Fall’s Light in Siouxland, Gull Point State Park

6 Dec

I love the play of light when I am out photographing in Siouxland and elsewhere. I don’t always capture what I see, but it doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy the effects of light and shadow play or the interaction of color say between water and foliage. And then I try to amuse myself taking a self-portrait via a reflection and getting results that might be questionable but still fun nonetheless.

Siouxland’s Mickelson City Park, Estherville

1 Jul

This spring when I ventured into the northern part of Iowa Siouxland making my way to the Iowa Lakes Region, I stopped in Estherville, Iowa. A nice community as a gateway to the lakes region. Like many small communities, there are hidden gems in most and it takes a little time and patience to find them. One of those gems for Estherville is a city park, the Mickelson City Park, one of eight parks in the community. Tucked away it has some sprawling greens, a small meditative grotto garden with the Des Moines River running through it. It was too early in spring when I visited, but the quiet, the feel of nature and hearing the song springs bring life back to an area after a long winter was grand. It is true that sometimes one needs to stop and smell whatever “roses” present themselves and take a moment to enjoy it.
