Navigating Winter in Siouxland, Sergeant Bluff

9 Feb

One thing a person living in Siouxland learns at a fairly young driving age is how to navigate streets in winter. On a recent trip down to the community of Sergeant Bluff the city plows its city streets much like a lot of Midwestern towns. It pushes the snow into the middle and sometimes removes that pile overnight when possible, and sometimes not.

In the Siouxland area snow after a major storm is generally pushed into the center of a street to clear a path for traffic such as in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018. (Photo by Jerry L Mennenga)

One thing is certain though, when it snows a lot, small towns and communities must do something fairly quickly to allow traffic to flow so as not to shut down businesses that can’t be bothered with a seasonal hiccup. More snow is forecast for the Siouxland area in the next couple of days so I expect to see some piles grow a bit before winter is over.
