Murals Rock Rapids

Twenty six murals currently dot the landscape of Rock Rapids, Iowa, June 6, 2013, and more are expected. Rock Rapids Mural Society member Norma Jansma explains the mural project began in 2002 as a way of telling the history of the small town. (photo by Jerry Mennenga ©)

In the late 1890’s the citizens of Rock Rapids rose up against a house of prostitution that existed in their community. Although the law was on the side of the citizenry, the house remained in operation for a period of time. Th “Ladies of the Night” pictured in the windows above represent one of societies oldest professions.”
